Definition of terms
Threats in the electrical environment are often designated by abbreviations of the English term for the threat.
EMC - Elektromagnetic Compatibility
The ability of a device, equipment or system to work in its electromagnetic environment without unacceptable impact.
EMI - Electromagnetic Interference
Disturbance caused by electromagnetic phenomena.
RFI - Radio Frequency Interference
Radio frequency disturbance.
TEMPEST – Compromising emanations
Undesired electromagnetic or acoustic signals generated in e.g. information processing and telecom equipment. Signals that, if they can be understood by unauthorized persons, can contribute to the disclosure of classified information.
EMP – Electromagnetic Pulse
A burst of electromagnetic radiation.
LEMP - Lightning EMP
Electromagnetic pulse from lightning discharge. Can also stand for low-level electromagnetic pulse in some contexts.
NEMP - Nuclear ElectroMagnetic Pulse
EMP from nuclear weapons.
SEMP - Synthetic ElectroMagnetic Pulse
Computer sabotage. Equipment that can transmit electromagnetic pulses to a computer and destroy information and equipment.
