Threats in the electrical environment
We are exposed daily to invisible threats from our environment, in both our working lives and our private lives. Disturbances in our electrical environment can cause damage to electronics and machinery and – in the worst-case scenario – present a hazard to humans.
These threats may be disruptive electromagnetic fields in electrical environments or conversely, undesired radiated electromagnetic fields from information processing equipment like computers, word processors, remote printers, etc. The threats are designated by abbreviations such as EMI, RFI, EMP, NEMP, LEMP, SEMP and TEMPEST.
Disruption fields can be both directly radiated and conducted. Protective equipment/methods are adapted to the nature of the disturbance.
